In an article about issues related to online voting systems, work by Berkeley researchers Philip Stark and David Wagner is mentioned. Toward developing a more secure alternative to Internet-based elections, they call for a model of "evidence-based elections," in which it is less important which machines are used, provided a paper trail is maintained. Only then can results be verified independently through audits and recounts.
