TRAC: Immigration Courts

The latest available data from the Immigration Courts show a continued decline in requests for deportation orders made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. According to case-by-case records analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), there were 14,296 new ICE filings for deportation orders during November 2012, down 5.7 percent from the previous month, and down over 25 percent from the monthly average for FY 2012.

Moreover, the proportion of individuals ordered to leave the country has fallen precipitously since TRAC’s systematic tracking began in 1998. During the first two months of FY 2013 only 56.3 percent of Immigration Court closures resulted in a removal or voluntary departure order. By contrast, 74.3 percent of all court closures resulted in deportation orders in FY 1998, and just two years ago (FY 2011) the rate was 70.2 percent.

TRAC’s monthly bulletin on the latest Immigration Court numbers offers very timely statistics compiled from case-by-case Immigration Court records we receive shortly after the end of each month. For more details, with numbers current as of November 30, 2012, see the latest bulletin at:

TRAC’s web-based tools have also been updated with the latest data so that you can examine each of these topics and get further details by specific Immigration Court, hearing location and (depending upon the specific tool) nationality, charge, and outcome type — removals, voluntary departures, terminations, relief, administrative closures.
