Wildland fire researcher Max Moritz discusses computer modeling research aimed at simulating the ways wind moves across the landscape –- one of the most unpredictable and dangerous factors in wild fires. "We do not have a good handle on wind patterns," he says. "Computationally, it’s a pretty complex and intensive problem. This is basically like fluid dynamics. You have a wind stream going across topography in three dimensions. … The technology is improving to the point where we can actually predict fairly fine-scale wind patterns, and that’s important for fires because fires respond very strongly to wind…."
