Share of Immigration Cases Ending in Deportation Orders Hits Record Low

TRAC’s web-based tools monitoring ICE’s exercise of prosecutorial discretion in the Immigration Courts have been updated with court data tracking outcomes through December 2011.

Very current data show that deportation orders fell, while individuals allowed to stay in the U.S. rose during October – December 2011. The share of ICE-initiated Immigration Court deportation proceedings resulting in deportation orders — 64.8 percent — reached the lowest level in the past 20 years. Results are believed to reflect in part ICE’s ongoing review of the court’s backlog.

A webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, at 2:00pm EST to present and discuss these new data and findings. Contacttrac@syr.edu to register.

TRAC’s findings are based on case-by-case data obtained from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) by TRAC under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

TRAC’s latest report can be viewed at this address:
http://trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/272/

GARETH PORTER, porter.gareth50@gmail.com, http://ipsnorthamerica.net/_authors/gporter.php

Porter is an investigative journalist and historian specializing in U.S. national security policy. He just wrote the piece: "A Dangerous Game on Iran," which states: "When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Washington Post columnist David Ignatius this week that he believes Israel was likely to attack Iran between April and June, it was ostensibly yet another expression of alarm at the Israeli government’s threats of military action.

"But even though the administration is undoubtedly concerned about that Israeli threat, the Panetta leak had a different objective. The White House was taking advantage of the current crisis atmosphere over that Israeli threat and even seeking to make it more urgent in order to put pressure on Iran to make diplomatic concessions to the United States and its allies on its nuclear program in the coming months.

"The real aim of the leak brings into sharper focus a contradiction in the Barack Obama administration’s Iran policy between its effort to reduce the likelihood of being drawn into a war with Iran and its desire to exploit the Israeli threat of war to gain diplomatic leverage on Iran."

With the need for Soldiers in Afghanistan to engage the enemy at longer distances, Picatinny Arsenal has completed initial training and fielding of a weapon for traditional Army units previously used only by special operations commands. The Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System, or MAAWS, also known as the M3 Carl Gustaf, has been in the United States Special Operations Command inventory since 1991. However, the unique capabilities of both the system and its ammo led to a forward operational assessment, known as a FOA.
The MAAWS has similarities to the AT4 shoulder-fired, anti-tank system. But the MAAWS is unique in that the system itself is not disposable, which means it can be used more than once.
